How did majoring in English prepare you for your career?
Majoring in English set me up for a career in the sports journalism field. I’d always played and been around the game, but choosing English as a major set me on a path to cover sports as a storyteller.
How has majoring in English enriched your life?
Majoring in English has enriched my life by allowing me the platform to build longstanding relationships in my community and within athletics. I am an award-winning journalist and heading into my fourth year as a member of the Valdosta Daily Times and my second year as sports editor. I am very proud of these career accomplishments and I feel blessed for what majoring in English has afforded me in life. Journalism has absolutely changed my life.
What advice or insight do you have for ßÏÀÖÔ° alumni and students interested in your career field?
If I could give any ßÏÀÖÔ° alumni or students advice, I would tell them to embrace criticism and make a concerted effort to improve and succeed. I started my college career very undisciplined and my level of focus was inconsistent. I took all of the criticism I received as motivation. Some of it, I took more personally than I should have but it made me a better writer and a better journalist. I wouldn’t trade my time in ßÏÀÖÔ°’s English department for anything.
