This map is a sample term-by-term course schedule. The milestones listed below each term are designed to keep you on course to graduate in four years.  A sample schedule is provided as a general guideline to help you build a full schedule each term; your advisor can help you tailor this schedule to suit your desired learning outcomes. For example, the elective courses have been preselected in the schedule below to satisfy all core curriculum and state, lab science, and multicultural requirements, but you can alter elective choices with the approval of your advisor.   The sample provided also assumes you take fifteen hours each fall and spring semester until graduation; if you wish to take courses during the summer semester(s), your advisor can assist with modifying this schedule.  Another common modification is for students admitted to The Honors College.  The Honors College offers interdisciplinary seminars, a special track of core curriculum courses, and opportunities for independent research that lead to a Certificate in University Honors; your advisor can assist with your selection of these honors-designated courses.

 Students who major in economics gain an understanding of the economic processes that provide the foundation for business, political and social behavior. Students learn about macroeconomic and microeconomic concepts, develop quantitative skills to solve economic problems and hone their ability to make predictions and formulate economic forecasts. The program stresses the importance of critical thinking skills, effective oral and written communication, and the application of knowledge to solve business problems. Economists conduct research, collect and analyze economic data, monitor and write about trends in the economy and predict future trends. Economists also study the production and distribution of goods, resources, and services within society.  Students pursuing a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree in Economics at the Langdale College of Business receive a rigorous education that prepares them for a variety of careers in government and in the private sector such as financial analyst, medical analyst, energy consultant, financial advisor, and data analyst. Alternatively, economics majors may also choose to pursue graduate studies in areas such as law, business, urban planning, and journalism.

With early major declaration and planning assistance from your advisor, both the BBA in Economics and the Master of Business Administration (MBA) degrees can be completed in five years.  An undergraduate student may take up to 9 semester credit hours of graduate classes without being admitted to the Graduate School. Students must be within 30 credit hours of graduation and have a cumulative GPA of 3.00 or higher. MBA graduates have many career opportunities in business enterprises.

 Students who complete the degree requirements for economics graduate with a Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA) degree. All BBA programs are accredited by the Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB). Less than 5% of business schools worldwide have AACSB accreditation. All economics majors complete the BBA senior college core (21 hours); a common nine-hour sequence of major courses; fifteen hours of required electives for economics majors; nine hours of supporting courses; and six hours of general electives. Combined with prerequisite courses in business, economics, and accounting, the courses taken the last sixty hours of the program provides each student with a solid background in business and economics.

What is economics? Economics is the study of how resources are used to meet society’s needs. It is an essential aspect of virtually every decision individuals, businesses, and governments make. Students who pursue a B.B.A degree in Economics develops the analytical and problem-solving skills needed to make these decisions. Minors in Advertising and Promotions, Business Analytics, Business Law, Economics, Entrepreneurship, Healthcare Administration, Human Resources, Operations Management, Professional Sales, and Supply Chain Management allow majors to gain in-depth knowledge of these areas. Our students successfully completing the economics coursework should be able to analytically and critically solve complex problems; be adept in managing and drawing inferences from large datasets; and understand and clearly communicate complex ideas.

What do economists do? Economics is FUN, and economists study a wide range of topics, from the usual suspects of GDP, inflation, national debt, and unemployment to the environment, health care, crime and punishment, marriage, addiction, sports, voting behavior, government programs, education, religion, discrimination, and basically any type of human behavior.  Many economics majors work in the financial sector, in the insurance industry, as business consultants, management consultants, business analysts, financial advisors, portfolio managers, or for local, state and federal government agencies, etc. Economists forecast economic activity, design tax policies, evaluate programs implemented by the government or other agencies, analyze the impact of laws, supervise businesses, and manage firms. Economics is an excellent precursor to graduate degrees in business, law, economics, public administration, and international relations.
