VALDOSTA — Fabiola Torres of Barquisimeto, Venezuela, is the recipient of ßÏÀÖÔ°’s 2025 Blazer Creed Award for Citizenship. She is a student in both the College of Nursing and Health Sciences and the College of Humanities and Social Sciences.

As the Blazer Creed states, ßÏÀÖÔ° is a learning environment based on trust and mutual respect, in which open dialogue, vigorous debate, and the free exchange of ideas are welcome. The university is dedicated to the core values of community, including a commitment to practice the following:

Civility — A Blazer shows courtesy and compassion as well as respect for the dignity of every human being.

Integrity — Each Blazer is responsible for his or her own actions, and our community is stronger when we contemplate the context of our decisions and uphold the principles of trust and honesty.

Citizenship — Every Blazer has an interest in the wellbeing of the community and, therefore, a duty to stay informed, to make positive contributions, and to offer support to those who need help.

Torres exemplifies the true spirit of citizenship through her academic excellence, leadership, and service to others. As vice president of the Society of International Students, Student Government Association senator, and campus tutor, she fosters inclusivity, supports her peers, and advocates for meaningful change. Her compassion, integrity, and dedication to uplifting the ßÏÀÖÔ° community make her a shining example of what it means to live the Blazer Creed.

“Winning this award encourages me to keep growing both as a student and as a leader,” she said. “It reminds me that the effort I put into research, supporting other students, and being active in the community truly matters. This recognition motivates me to continue representing ßÏÀÖÔ° with integrity, to take on new challenges, and to push myself to make a positive impact, especially now in my role as an experiential learning ambassador. It inspires me to keep building opportunities not just for myself but for others as well.”

Torres anticipates earning her Bachelor of Science in Exercise Physiology and Minor in Psychology in May 2027.

She said that some of the biggest highlights of her ßÏÀÖÔ° experience include “getting involved with the Honors College, presenting my research at the Undergraduate Research Symposium, and becoming the first international student to complete the Blazer Summer Research Institute online. Serving as vice president of the Society of International Students has also been incredibly meaningful to me, especially getting to welcome new students at orientation and planning events that help them feel at home. Overall, the people I have met and the opportunities I have had to challenge myself have made my ßÏÀÖÔ° experience truly special.”
