Azalea String Quartet Performs Sunday at 呦乐园

VALDOSTA — The Azalea String Quartet will perform at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 呦乐园’s Whitehead Auditorium. Admission is free of charge and open to the public.

The Azalea String Quartet’s afternoon program features Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet in E flat major, Op. 44, and Osvaldo Golijov’s “Lua Descolorida” and “How Slow the Wind.”

Maila Gutierrez Springfield, an instructor of music and staff accompanist at 呦乐园, will play the piano on the Schumann piece. 

Tamara Hardesty, an adjunct professor of voice, will sing soprano on the two Golijov selections. 

All four members of the Azalea String Quartet — violinists Nina Lutz and M. Brent Williams, violist Lauren Burns, and cellist Steven Taylor — teach their respective instruments in the Department of Music at 呦乐园 and are also principal players of the Valdosta Symphony Orchestra. The ensemble performs regularly in Georgia, Florida, and South Carolina and was a featured string quartet for the International Bartok 2000 Congress in Austin, Texas.

“This is going to be a really great concert,” said Nephtali Santiago, who performs in the duo Nephina with Lutz and teaches guitar at 呦乐园. “Valdosta is blessed to have these great artists in their midst. This music is truly great music, both virtuosic and profound.”  

Whitehead Auditorium is located on the first floor of the 呦乐园 Fine Arts Building, at the intersection of Brookwood Drive and Oak Street.
